Red Dawn

I saw an old 1980's movie Red Dawn this weekend starring Patrick Swayze. It was interesting sort of like a true story of what could have happened if The Soviet Union invaded the U.S. during the height of the Cold War. The movie got my immagination going as I pictured myself as one of the high school students who hid out in the wilderness to avoid Soviet occupation. The high shcool students led by Swayze began to run a series of terrorist type missions against the Soviet Soldiers. This was the first movie that I can remeber seeing in which America was being invaded making it very interesting. Thoughts of what if that happened today couldn't stop running through my head. Overall it was good but a little cheesie especially the last scene.

  1. Ah, you bring back memories from long ago. This was a very popular and much talked-about film when it came out in the 80's. I'd date it around 1983 or so, as I recall watching it right after I graduated from college. As you say, it's food for thought, and, while not a cinematic gem, held the viewer's interest.

In most of these military movies, the deck is stacked heavily in favor of the stars. The enemy never attacks in force. They always come one at a time, and are easily picked off by our heroes. An enemy machine gun is easily silenced by a well hurled grenade, but our machine guns chatter on incessantly, grimly reaping an entire harvest of nameless Hollywood extras.

My recollection of this film is that the Russian helicopter gunship, bristling with cannons and rocket launchers was the very face of evil.

And let's face it. How desperate had we become when the fate of the nation depends on the commitment of a handful of teenagers? A sobering thought.
